TVHS 2025 Sunday Lecture Series

Have you ever wondered what lies beneath the waters of Virginia’s rivers, the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic? Virginia has a rich maritime history which began long before the first English inhabitants landed on our shores. From harvesting the waters for food, to keeping the remains of historic and everyday sites and structures now submerged underwater and serving as the storyteller of many maritime battles, the waters in and around our state are the keepers of many secrets. Virginia’s Department of Historic Resources partners with federal, state, and private partners to preserve and protect this rich history and works to reveal these secrets to us for ours and future generations to explore and understand.

Brendan Burke, Virginia’s State Underwater Archaeologist, will join us for our third and final TVHS Sunday Lecture. In addition to serving as Virginia’s lead maritime archaeologist he Independent Consultant in Maritime History & Archaeology and served as the Associate Director of Archaeology for the Lighthouse Archaeological Maritime Program in St. Augustine, Florida.
