The Modern Stable is home to the Colonial Williamsburg Coach & Livestock department and is home to many of our rare breed animals, as well as our carriages. Cared for by the Coach & Livestock department, our rare breeds include horses, oxen, sheep, and fowl. These animals contribute to the living history museum in many of the same ways they would have contributed to the colonial capital: as workhorses and oxen pulling carts, wagons, and carriages; and providing wool, eggs, milk, and manure for trades throughout the city. Check our Events Calendar for a Behind the Scenes tour of the stable where you’ll get to meet some of our animals, discuss training techniques, and maybe even try out a sidesaddle.
