This two-story dwelling is part of the property owned in the 18th century by Robert Carter, serving as Speaker of the House of Burgesses, a member of the governor's Council, and eventually as acting governor of the colonial capital. Restored in 1931-1932 and 1951-1953, the brick kitchen is an original structure.
