Discover the rich history of the Brick House Shop, an accommodation that offers a unique opportunity to experience Williamsburg through the lens of 18th-century craftsmanship. Situated behind the iconic Brick House Tavern on Botetourt Street, this two-bedroom property was once home to the skilled entrepreneurs Cosby and Moore, who operated a thriving “Riding-Chair Makers” business, alongside the production of carts and wheels.

In the 18th century, the Brick House Shop served as a hub for mechanical innovation. Cosby and Moore were known for their work in crafting riding chairs, a type of carriage used for comfortable travel, as well as a range of carts and wheels. The building’s design reflects the industrial spirit of the time, where skilled tradesmen worked diligently to meet the needs of the growing colonial community.

A Historical Workshop

After the death of James Anderson, the property passed to his heir, Leroy Anderson, who insured the building in 1806. Around this time, the building was altered to include a kitchen in the rear, which had originally served as a smith's shop. The history of the Brick House Shop is a testament to Williamsburg's thriving craftsmanship and its place in the broader narrative of colonial America.
