Nestled within the heart of Williamsburg, the Kitchen-Forge offers a unique opportunity to stay in a property with a fascinating history. Originally owned by Dr. Philip Barraud, a prominent local physician, this property was part of a larger plot of land that has seen multiple owners and significant historical moments. Today, it stands as a beautifully restored building that provides a perfect blend of historic charm and modern comfort, offering an unforgettable experience for those visiting Williamsburg.

A Rich and Storied History

The Kitchen-Forge’s history spans centuries and reflects Williamsburg’s vibrant past. Originally owned by Dudley Digges, the property was sold in 1761 to merchant William Withers and conveyed to apothecary William Carter. By 1782, Dr. Philip Barraud, a Norfolk native, purchased the property and established his medical practice here, becoming a key figure in Williamsburg. Dr. Barraud’s house & kitchen-forge became vital to his work, blending medical practice with the day-to-day operations of the property.

Throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, the property changed hands several times, with notable owners including Richard Coke, Jr. and Anna Field. In 1924, it was passed to Mary Boyd Ryland, who eventually conveyed the property to Colonial Williamsburg in 1940. After significant restoration in 1987, the property was transformed into a VIP accommodation for Colonial Williamsburg’s Raleigh Tavern Society, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the history of one of Williamsburg’s most distinguished medical practitioners.
