Experience the history of Williamsburg with a stay at the Nicholas-Tyler Laundry, a beautifully reconstructed building located at the corner of East Francis Street and South England Street. This historic property is named after Robert Carter Nicholas, the 18th-century treasurer of Virginia, and John Tyler, who lived in the house in 1841 when he received the news that he would become the 10th President of the United States. The building was reconstructed in 1941, preserving its historic character while offering modern comforts for today’s travelers.

A Rich Historical Legacy

In 1841, John Tyler and his family lived in the house when he became president following the death of President William Henry Harrison. The laundry building itself is a nod to the 18th-century practice of having detached laundry buildings to reduce the risk of fire and to keep the heat and odor of washing away from the main house. The laundry was typically located near a well to provide easy access to water, and linens were washed seasonally—every couple of weeks in summer and once a month in winter.
