Nestled across from Market Square Tavern and steeped in history, this unique property invites guests to experience the life and legacy of an 18th-century doctor-apothecary in one of Williamsburg's most iconic settings.

In keeping with 18th-century traditions, the property we now call Peter Hay's Kitchen was designed to keep the kitchen separate from the main house. This was a standard practice to minimize the risks of fire and prevent the spread of food odors and heat into the living spaces. The detached kitchen also served to ensure that cooking didn’t interfere with the daily rhythms of the household.

The History of Peter Hay's Kitchen

Peter Hay was not just a local apothecary; he was a trusted physician who ran his own shop on the bustling Duke of Gloucester Street during the mid-1700s. Known for providing medicines and sundries to the people of Williamsburg, Mr. Hay’s influence extended beyond the realm of medicine into the daily life of the town’s residents.
