Restoring Williamsburg by George Humphrey Yetter and Carl R. Lounsbury | Hardcover | 296 pages | $50.00

This book expands on Williamsburg Before and After, a Colonial Williamsburg classic originally published in 1988. It tells the remarkable story of how the Rev. Dr. W.A.R. Goodwin and John D. Rockefeller Jr. undertook the restoration of the 18th-century colonial capital. This fully revised new edition brings the story up to the present.
The work sheds new light on the original restoration and on the research that continues to reshape the town and the understanding of its history. The restoration is an ongoing process, one that has continued long after Goodwin and Rockefeller left the scene. The book also includes aspects of Williamsburg’s history that were not explored in the original edition.
Lavishly illustrated with more than 350 photographs, watercolors, sketches, maps and other illustrations, Restoring Williamsburg features previously unpublished images from before the restoration, as well as new present-day photography. The book is a testament to the enduring power of Colonial Williamsburg to inspire Americans.
George Humphrey Yetter, who wrote Williamsburg Before and After, was associate curator of architectural drawings for The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation until he retired in 2013. Carl R. Lounsbury, who revised and expanded the original work, was senior architectural historian for Colonial Williamsburg until he retired in 2016. He is co-editor of The Chesapeake House: Architectural Investigation by Colonial Williamsburg and currently teaches history at William & Mary.
The publication of this book was made possible by a generous gift from Brenda Snow and Oliver Portmann. The book is distributed by Colonial Williamsburg’s retail partner, Aramark, and by Yale University Press.
